Power vs. Performance Tradeoffs for Reduced Resolution Adaptive Equalizers
نویسنده
چکیده
Adaptive channel equalization algorithms are commonly used in wireless communications receivers to counter intersymbol interference, multi-path dispersion, and other time varying channel degradations. In this paper we obtain approximate expressions for the increase in mean square error of the LMS adaptive algorithm when the total processing power is decreased by reducing the number of data and filter coefficient bits used by the algorithm. We also obtain expressions for the power-optimal bit-allocation factor which determines the proportion of the bits allocated to the data vs. allocated to the coefficients. Numerical studies are presented for an exponential memory 1S1 channel and 4-ary PSK signaling. These studies indicate that as few as 8 bits total are needed to equalize the channel and that most of these bits (6 out of 8) should be allocated to the filter coefficients.

متن کاملOn the Practical Aspects of Joint Passive Phase Conjugation and Equalization Underwater Communication Systems
Underwater acoustic communication systems suffer from the channel impairments which results in time spreading of the transmitted signal. In underwater environment, multiple replicas of the transmitted signal are received at the receiver through different paths, which causes significant Inter-Symbol Interference (ISI). Decision Feedback Equalizers (DFE) was utilized to overcome this type of inte...
متن کاملEqualization of Non Linear Optical Channels
This paper presents a comparative analysis of various linear and nonlinear equalizers for a high density optical channel. Since the read-out process is nonlinear, a suitable model basedon the Volterra series has been adopted. In this work, we compare the performance and complexity of equalizers designed for linear and nonlinear channels. Specifically, Adaptive Minimum Mean Square Error (MSE), A...
متن کاملA robust and effective fuzzy adaptive equalizer for powerline communication channels
Fuzzy adaptive equalizers (FAEs) are adaptive equalizers that apply the concepts of fuzzy logic. The main merit of applying FAEs in powerline channel equalization is that linguistic information (fuzzy IF–THEN rules) and numerical information (input–output pairs) can be combined into the equalizers. The adaptive algorithms adjust the parameters of the membership functions which characterize the ...
